THE BENEFITS OF BODY BRUSHING

THE BENEFITS OF BODY BRUSHING

Body brushing, otherwise known as dry brushing, is a traditional Ayurvedic practice that has been used for centuries.

Originally practised with raw silk or linen gloves, today we tend to use a natural bristle brush. This technique is especially supportive when you’re feeling out of balance, which may include lethargy, sluggishness, or physical and mental dullness.

Body brushing is particularly beneficial during the colder months, from late winter into early spring (known in Ayurveda as kapha season), when the body naturally needs extra stimulation.

The benefits of body brushing:

Supports lymphatic flow and detoxification

Body brushing helps stimulate circulation and encourage lymphatic drainage, supporting the body’s natural detoxification processes.

Aids digestion and elimination

The skin is our largest eliminative organ, so body brushing can support detoxification by stimulating the lymphatic system and helping it release toxins. By activating this system, it’s a gentle yet powerful way to support the body’s natural detox processes and aid digestion.

Firms the skin and boosts your natural glow

Like any exfoliator, body brushing removes dead, dry skin cells and encourages fresh cell turnover. It can help reduce excess fluid buildup and evenly distribute fat deposits beneath the skin, resulting in skin that feels brighter and more toned.

How to body brush:

  1. Start with dry skin and a natural bristle brush. Using light pressure, begin at the soles of your feet and brush upward in long, sweeping motions, always moving toward the heart to follow the lymphatic flow.

  2. Move to your hands and brush up the arms, then gently brush the back.

  3. Finish with the abdomen using clockwise movements to support digestion, followed by the chest and neck.

Just a couple of minutes each day can offer both immediate and long-term benefits.

Tip: Follow with a warm shower and your favourite body oil for ultimate hydration and glow.
